Some years, when the spring bulbs start flowering, I notice gaps. Places where for some reason or another the bulbs died or have gotten too crowded to bloom or something. When this happens, I resort to planting forks, spoons or knives.
I write what bulb I need to plant on the handle and stick them in the ground to mark where to dig in the fall. It works great. This year, I have a gap in the daffodils along our driveway.
Over the summer, this area will be filled with a purple salvia. You won't see the forks. But, I'll be able to find them in the fall marking where I need daffodil bulbs.
