Paperwhites Please

While browsing some after Christmas sales, I came upon a small bag of paperwhite bulbs.  They had a few sprouts already, but I bought them to try and get some blooms in the house this winter.

I like to force paper whites in tall vases.  They act as supports.

I put a layer of glass pebbles at the bottom to support the roots.

Then, I nestled three bulbs into each vase.

I added water about half way up the bulbs.  Now, to wait for the blooms.

  1. The taller vases should do the trick completely and look lovely.

  2. I find it fascinating that something could grow like that. I'll be waiting to see the results--I love paper whites.
    Have a great weekend!

  3. I still have never tried to force buds. My paperwhites have been finished (in the garden) for several weeks now...Looking forward to watching yours!

  4. You are going to have some lovely blooms. I just love Paper white blooms but indoors the fragrance over powers me and I have to take them outdoors. We will enjoy seeing those blooms in the future.

  6. Hi Sherlock,
I have never thought of, or seen this before, except of course the usual hyacinth bulb stuck on the top of it's vase. I must give this a go though!

  7. These will look so pretty when in bloom! I have some potted up in soil; I've got my fingers crossed those sprouts will eventually bloom.

  8. Paper whites are so pretty. The scent is a little too strong for me but I sure do love them. Great idea to put them in tall vases. Hope you have a nice weekend.

  9. Plus when you do it that way, you make everything so much more elegant. I love that about bulbs. Can't wait to see how they turn out for you:)

  10. Nice winter garden project. I'm just not an inside flower person. My house just doesn't have the window space for flowers so only fake flowers are on the tables when needed.

Have a great creative winter gardening day.

  12. I have never forced bulbs, either. I love your set up for the paperwhites. I don't do well with strong scents, so won't be able to try your idea.

  13. Good luck! Someone gave me some paperwhites last month and they bloomed right around New Years Day. Lovely smell and such cheery little flowers! I had never forced bulbs before...these were crowded into a small pot of soil with the tops of the bulbs sticking above ground. Seemed to work! I'll be saving the bulbs to try again next year. Good luck with yours!

  14. I wonder if it is too late for me to do this? I'll definitely write it in on my calendar for next year - after Christmas!

Sadly, my "indoor scoop" isn't too impressive right now.
