October Lettuce and Flowers

Here we are deep into October and we haven't had a killing freeze yet.  We also haven't had much rain.  We are dry, dry, dry.

At this point in the season, I start cleaning up the garden even if we haven't had a freeze because November just does not lend itself well to doing that.  Some containers are gone, but many have come together on the patio with the large ones that live there all year.  They look great together.  Why don't I just put them there in the spring to start?  These will stay until a freeze decides they are to be cleaned up and stored for winter.

I don't cut back my perennials until spring so other than some vegetable garden clean up I mostly store away decorative items and empty rain barrels and water gardens.

I still have tomato plants producing in the vegetable garden and I planted some late radishes which are just about done.  There are also some carrots.  Don't know if I'll get anything from those, but it was worth a try.  I am harvesting lettuce!  I planted it in a container.  It was rough going in September when we had record breaking heat, but it made it and I can move the container around and cover it if needed to stretch that lettuce harvest as far as possible.

We have rain in the forecast.  Hoping to get to use the rain gauge again before I put it up for winter.

Be well and happy gardening!

Distracting Flying Flowers

Hello!  I am behind with everything right now except for things where I work.  My wonderful husband and I just returned from a short vacation and I have a million things to do.  I hope to get the October tour photos soon, and it's time to start cleaning up the garden for winter.  However, I was very distracted today by this scene...

The Monarch Butterflies are everywhere.  I spent some time chasing them around with a camera.  Enjoy!
